Apprentice Population Dashboard

This Apprentice Population dashboard provides a comparison of all available demographic categories for current apprenticeships against the same demographic representation in the total available workforce at the national, region, state, and county levels. Currently, the page includes data through 11/13/2024.

Note: Data will be updated quarterly. If you have any questions or concerns, please email apprenticeship-public-data@dol.gov.

Data Sources

Registered Apprenticeship Data

  • Includes State Data from the Registered Apprenticeship Partners Information Database System (RAPIDS), which includes data uploaded by State Apprenticeship Agencies (SAA) states.

Available Workforce Data

  • Includes data from the United States Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS), which provides workforce population data down to the county level.
  • This dataset is from 2020. Census releases updated information for previous years on a two-year delay.

LOCATION: Apprentice location is tied to the physical address of the program the apprentice supports. For FBOP apprentices, apprentice location is tied to the physical location of the employer.

Limitations

Active apprentice totals displayed on the Apprentice Population dashboard will be different than what is displayed on the Apprentice by State dashboard. The apprentice data used throughout the Apprentice Population dashboard is driven by the information captured in Census ACS. As a result, the dashboard excludes apprentices who:

  • Did not self-identify in a demographic category
  • Support programs (or employers, for Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP) located in a county that is not included in Census ACS
  • Support programs (or employers, for FBOP) located in a United States territory
  • Support United Services Military Apprenticeship Programs (USMAP)
  • The Apprentice Population Dashboard is a tool to facilitate demographic comparisons of registered apprentices with the total available workforce. Through the ability to disaggregate information, stakeholders are able to compare Registered Apprenticeship programs against the same demographic representation in the total available workforce at the national, regional, state, and county level. The Dashboard is inclusive of data uploaded by states overseen by both the Department of Labor’s Office of Apprenticeship and State Apprenticeship Agencies (SAA) into the Registered Apprenticeship Partners Information Database System (RAPIDS), as well as data from the Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS).

  • Dashboard information is calculated by comparing available census data with the data of active apprentices from RAPIDS. Census percentages are generated by dividing counts of each demographic by the total population, but also take into account registered apprenticeship localities to increase the accuracy of the data. An index value of exactly 100 largely reflects that the apprentice population for the selected demographic is exactly proportionate to their workforce representation. An index value over 100 may indicate that the demographic is over-represented in registered apprenticeship when compared with their proportion of the total workforce. As such, an index value under 100 reflects that the selected demographic may be underrepresented, and that there may be opportunity to better target registered apprenticeship opportunities to the identified population.

  • Since comparisons are subject to the availability of RAPIDS and ACS data, there are limitations to conclusions that should be drawn solely based on the information from this Dashboard. Notable limitations include the exclusion of individuals ages 16 to 20 from Census data, while RAPIDS includes participants as young as 16 years old. Additionally, localities with minimal registered apprenticeship participation, may have some data suppressed to protect participant identities. Looking ahead, the Department will continue to seek ways to bolster and improve the information provided by this Dashboard.
